First Bruceshaw Voice event welcomes retail industry friends

 

The first official Bruceshaw Voice event; the start of a series of conversations that welcomed our industry friends to discuss some of the main issues that have an impact on today’s high streets.

The hosts for the evening John Ryan, Stores Editor of Retail Week and Tom Greenhalgh, CEO of FITCH, sat round the table at Morton’s Club, Mayfair with a group of developers, retailers, landlords and store designers to discuss what matters when it comes to giving the high street teeth, as well as a voice.

The evening proved to be a debate with point and counterpoint; and while there were some who might have disagreed with a number of the sentiments expressed, the consensus was that collaboration and listening are central to making progress.

Among the many topics covered it was felt that landlords should examine who and what they charge when it comes to structuring rents and equally they should be able to talk meaningfully to developers. Retail chiefs need to talk to their store managers and understand the issues that confront them on a daily basis. And when it comes to the matter of store design, there is a lot more to life than things digital.

A snapshot of just some of the points that were made:

  • Cater more for the different requirements of differing demographics – it’s not all about the millennials, however important they may be perceived to be
  • Encourage independent retailers – they give diversity and character to malls and high streets
  • Create more flexible spaces and short-term leases to allow change on the high street
  • Encourage ‘disloyalty’ – it may repay in the long term
  • Councils should be encouraged to have minimum standards

The evening was a great success and can only be seen as a starting point for what’s to come. The opportunity for a rematch within the next six months is in place, not only to see how things might have changed, but to monitor developments and to consider what other matters may need to be addressed in the future. All in all it was an evening of good food, great company and a very passionate conversation that will now continue to grow.
